The Founding of Lodge Herodom
Losie (Lodge) Herodom 1768 s.c was consecrated on the 31 st January 1987 in the Masonic Temple Kempton Park in the District Grand Lodge of the Transvaal, Orange Free State and Northern Cape.
The Right Worshipful District Grand Master of the time Bro. M. Linton being the consecrating officer.
The Lodge was originally Afrikaans speaking hence Losie (lodge) Herodom. It's sponsor Lodges were Lodge Kempton 1482 s.c. and Losie Eenheid 1488 s.c.
The first Master of the Lodge was Bro.P.L Uys.
The apron of the Lodge is The Bruce tartan.
For whatever reason the Lodge began to struggle and was close to handing back it's charter in 1989 but thanks to the dedication and support of a number of Brethren from Lodge Athol 1442 s.c who affiliated to Lodge Herodom the Lodge was saved. It then began to work The William Harvey Ritual in English and had its' first Scottish Master in Bro. P. Mulligan in 1990.
The Lodge has gone from strength to strength since then and is no doubt one of the strongest Lodges in the now District Grand Lodge of Central South Africa .
A strength not only in numbers but a strength in the commitment of the Brethren to perform excellent ritual work and to visit other Lodges to promote Lodge Herodom and enjoy the harmony with the Brethren from other Lodges.
Lodge Herodom is as well known across the District for its' enjoyment of a good harmony board as it is for its excellent ritual work.
Geographically, Herodom is the name given to a small mountain or hill very close to Kilwinning in Scotland which is reputed to be and is recognized as the birthplace of Freemasonry. There are at least 41 Lodges which have Kilwinning as part of their name.
If we trace our way back through the years, you will find different explanations for the name Herodom.
In 1858 one historian claims that Herodom is derived from the Greek words ‘lepos hieros” meaning Holy and “domos' meaning House and when combined indicate Holy House.
Five hundred years previous to this we are told that The Royal Order of Scotland consisted of two degrees, one that of Hero(dom and the other, the Rosy Cross.
The ritual of the Royal Order of Scotland and the Degree of Herodom were first established at Icomkill and afterwards at Kilwinning, where the King of Scotland , Robert Bruce , took the chair in person, and tradition affirms that in 1314 this monarch again reinstated the Degree of Herodom in the Royal Order of Scotland.
The Order of Herodom formerly had it's seat at Kilwinning and there is reason to suppose that it and the Grand Lodge of St. Johns Masonry were governed by the same Grand Master.
It is written, “on 24 th June, 1314 , Robert Bruce, King of Scotland, instituted after the Battle of Bannockburn, The Order of Saint Andrew of the Thistle, to which was afterward united that of Herodom for the sake of the Scottish Masons, who composed a part of the thirty thousand men with whom he had fought and defeated the English army consisting of one hundred thousand men.
He formed the Grand Lodge of the Order of Herodom at Kilwinning, reserving for himself and his successors forever the title of Grand Masters”
From all the foregoing it would therefore appear that the name Herodom could be translated as the HOLY TEMPLE and that it was instituted in Scotland in the year 1314 nearly 700 years ago.
Herodom is therefore a name to be proud of and this Lodge, although a comparatively new Lodge, dates back in name to 1314 and the Order of Herodom.
